Barreto Scanlon

Gabriela Menna Barreto Scanlon focuses her practice on government enforcement defense, internal corporate investigations, and complex cross-border civil litigation, with a particular emphasis on Latin America. Bio

Ms. Scanlon represents clients in matters brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and other federal investigative agencies, including allegations of financial fraud and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. She also advises clients on the enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitration awards in the United States, as well as cross-border asset tracing and recovery.

As a dual-qualified attorney admitted to practice in New York, Washington, D.C., and Brazil, Ms. Scanlon is uniquely positioned to navigate multi-jurisdictional matters and develop legal strategies that work across different legal systems. She is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Among others, Ms. Scanlon has represented:

Clients in proceedings under 28 U.S.C. § 1782, obtaining discovery in U.S. federal courts for use in foreign litigation and international arbitration, including cross-border asset tracing and recovery matters
Clients in government enforcement matters before the DOJ, SEC, and other federal agencies involving allegations of financial fraud and FCPA violations
Foreign clients in the enforcement of international arbitration awards and foreign judgments in U.S. courts

Ms. Scanlon was appointed to the Criminal Justice Act panel of the DC Superior Court, one of the few Brazilian attorneys to hold that distinction. Prior to founding MB Scanlon in 2021 — which became Scanlon & Clingan LLP — Ms. Scanlon practiced at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in São Paulo, Kobre & Kim in New York and Washington, D.C., and Paul Hastings in Washington, D.C.
